The Monson Monument Project

“The Monson Family have been associated with South Carlton, its Church, and the surrounding County for many centuries. The monument is important to the family but, by association, also tells the story of the village, the local community, social and economic changes over many centuries, as well the fascinating story of Nicholas Stone the sculptor of the monument and royal favourite.

This project will allow many people, young and old, to learn more about the monument, but, as important as that is, also to hear the stories of many families from across the County of Lincolnshire and the East Midlands: those who have worked on the estate, those who have served in the houses associated with the Monson Family; indeed, to learn about those who damaged the monument during the Civil War - who they might have been, what motivated them to do what they did, and what was taking place in the country at the time.

I very much hope that the project will bring this wonderful history alive to a new generation.”

Emma, Lady Monson, October 2023.

In 2024, Irving-Patrick Consulting Ltd were commissioned to head up the project to restore the family monument of the Monson family, located in St John the Baptist Church, South Carlton. The monument had suffered centuries-worth of damage (from years of dirt and grime build-up, unintended damage (caused by a careless restoration attempt in the 19th century) and deliberate damage caused during the English Civil War. Consequently, the monument had been in a state of disrepair, and for several years had been sealed off from the public due to the unstable stonework. It is our objective that, upon completion of the restoration, visitors to the church will be able to get up close to the monument and appreciate its historical significance to the area.

Such a restoration project would require to be conducted to the highest possible standard, with attention to minute detail and preservation being the essential criteria to be met. For this, Skillingtons of Grantham were chosen to carry out the work and, as can now be seen, the results of their craft are astonishing.

Local metal-detecting enthusiasts and social media content creators 'Roman Found' were chosen to promote the projects through various platforms including YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. All with the aim of drawing attention to both the project and the history of the monument to a young and diverse audience.
